I’m currently writing two pieces: the follow-up to Blood To Blood and a yet-to-be-titled piece revolving around one of its characters, Justin McCarthy. Although, I admit, the Blood To Blood sequel has taken a back seat to the Justin piece which is eating me alive. He’s a very intense guy, that Justin, a flawed character… and his world is intense. Anyone who knows me personally can testify that I am not the same, and it’s truly all Justin’s fault. That’s pretty much all I can say about it for now.

So anyway, here’s the music that’s been serving as a backdrop for my writing over the past month. I’ve been really getting into Ed Sheeran (although he’s more in line with Sawyer Creed’s character in all honesty), but I love his brand of hip-hop-powered acoustic soul and the way he just lays it all out there for everyone to see. The newest artist I’ve been digging is Imagine Dragons. I’m still soaking in their sound and have found it sonically in line with the mood in Justin’s head. Silversun Pickups remains on constant rotation from last month.

Boston Stands Strong

Boston Stands Strong

Boston Stands Strong

I’m in shock as are many of us here. Trying to do anything I can to help anyone I can. It feels like there isn’t enough to give.

To the left is a picture of a little boy, Martin, waiting at the finish line, so proud of his marathon running dad, the father he had just hugged after he crossed the line. The dad he was waiting to hug again. Seconds after that hug, this boy’s body was taken away from him. But they can never take away his spirit.

I am proud of the way our city has come together in the wake of this tragedy. Bostonians always knew that no matter how cold people say we are deep down there is the Rock of Ages. And it’s visible today. In a city full of history, “oldest,” and firsts, we are stronger today than we ever have been. We are united. And we are moving forward through this thing one step at a time. Patriots Day now has a new level of significance; Patriots Day 2013 showed the world that they can never kill our Spirit.

Thanks to everyone for all your words and calls of encouragement. God bless all the souls who have been affected by the events from yesterday. God bless us all.

Muse 2013 – Boston

Last night, I took some time away from tapping on the computer to see my favorite band Muse. This time around they’re touring North America in support of their latest album The 2nd Law, and, as always, they were EPIC. If you have never seen them live, go now.

I took some video; unfortunately the sound is terrible, but you can get a great feeling for the light show. A friend who works at the Boston (TD for the corporate purists) Garden hooked me up with the playlist before the show. I was very excited to see they’d be playing a good mix of the new stuff, not so new stuff (from the previous album Resistance), older stuff (as in Starlight from Black Holes and Revelations) and classics (“Time Is Running Out” and one of my all-time faves “Stockholm Syndrome” from waaaay back in the day). What I didn’t know was they’d nix one of the new songs (“Animals”) for one of my top 3 Muse songs, (“Map of the Problematique”), or that they’d do a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s version of the “Star Spangled Banner” or a great partial cover of “House of The Rising Sun” complete with the audience singing the lyrics. Need I say I was amped?

So now, more than 24 hours later I’m still high on Muse adrenaline. I’m no groupie but I would definitely travel to another city, or country to see this band. Believe me, there is no other band in the world I can say that about. Below you can get an idea as to why their’s is referred to as one of, and sometimes THE, best live rock show on the planet. Their laser shows gets sicker every year.

It’s happened. I haven’t done a weekly post in over a month. But I have a good reason…

You see, I am currently in a wonderful fog. This fog manifests whenever a character and/or his/her circumstances has taken over and demands that I write what is satisfactory and what is true. I have experienced this fog before, but this time it is thicker because I am working on  two books simultaneously.

Some mornings I can barely see through this fog straight enough to drive my 9 year old to school.

I’m still learning how to operate successfully in this sometimes disturbing fog. When the characters get demanding, I streamline my life, focus on priorities and say “no” more often to things that can wait. So for now, I feel no pressure to keep up with weekly posts.

However, I must take a breather to tell you about some of the music I’ve been listening to. Since music is always a priority outside and within the fog, the tunes and artists take on a special meaning because they become a part of the creative process; the background as well as part of the fabric of ideas. Some of these tunes I listen to when I’m writing, some when I’m reading, doing research, and some when I’m turning over the plot and characters in my mind at a red light.
I’m currently writing two pieces: the follow-up to Blood To Blood and a yet-to-be-titled piece revolving around one of its characters, Justin McCarthy.

Summary: Sixteen-year-old Sawyer Creed’s invisible, yet undeniably real, tentacles have seemingly killed every family member who ever hurt his mom– including his alcoholic dad.

Now on mom’s wedding day, Sawyer’s uncontrollable ability puts his family in imminent danger. When the tentacles stretch purposefully toward mom and her new husband, the first guy who’s treated her well, Sawyer, realizing that he’s on a path to destroy the ones he loves, vows to take charge of his destiny by  making mom tell him the truth about why he’s different.

The tentacles seem to do his subconscious bidding when he’s angry or scared. Sawyer suspects it is a family legacy, a birthright mom denies. There is only one person who has the answers, one person who can help Sawyer have some semblance of a normal life; and that person, his grandmother and the matriarch of the Creed family, is also the person mom has hidden him from all of his life. tentacles is a short story prequel to the novel Blood To Blood.

As I posted earlier, I’m thrilled about this short story and it is my hope that it will hold everyone over until the next book is released.

Readers of Blood To Blood will remember Sawyer: the mysterious, brooding producer Angel Brown vows to hate. tentacles is a family drama which takes us back in time, before Sawyer meets Angel, to a turning point in his life.

As of tomorrow, February 19,  tentacles will be available exclusively on Kindle, but soon you’ll be able to download the e-version on other platforms.

O Come All Ye Faithful – RIP Sandy Hook Angels

O Come All Ye Faithful – RIP Sandy Hook Angels

On this weekend when so many Americans need emotional support and a sense of stability in the wake of the unspeakable incidents that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I rediscovered a video which has repeatedly brought comfort to my soul. When I write about “The Note For Which There Is No Name” (Blood To Blood) I think of Mariah Carey and the angelic beauty she communicates in this version of “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

At 2:40, there is an indescribable look on Patricia Carey’s face as she gazes at her daughter. That gaze speaks of years of struggle, love, sacrifice and reward. It is a look that revels in the honor of knowing that your “mom work” paid off. This look of pure love and joy almost always brings a smile to my face.

Nevertheless, today my heart breaks when I see the parents of the angels who were taken from us at Sandy Hook; angels whose parents will never have the opportunity to gaze lovingly at them as they live out their dreams. Angels who will never see their children again in this life.

God bless the parents and children of the angels of Sandy Hook. God bless our country and show us the Light.
