In Loving Memory

In loving memory of my dad…

My father passed away a few days ago. His health had been declining for a long time, so it was not an unexpected event. Nonetheless, the melancholy felt while viewing old family photos runs deep.

Some of my happiest memories of my dad are from when I was a small child. There is a particular soundtrack to these memories: music that evokes the golden glow that covered the world as seen by my young eyes and processed by my yet-to-be-jaded mind. My dad had very interesting tastes in music; he was old school and conservative, a lover of classic country, 70s soul, vintage reggae and classical music. When I was little, the radio played almost 24-7, and my adult need for having constant music playing is due, in part, to the fact that my dad *always* had the radio on in the house and in the car.

As my father lay in an irreversible coma during the last days of his life, his body was unable to do much, but the nurse informed me the hearing is the last thing to go. I immediately went out and purchased a little cd player/boombox and a few CDs on my way to the hospital. Unable to find any Charlie Pride, or Tom Jones (two of his favorite artists) I grabbed Mozart, Puccini and Chopin compilations. As the family surrounded dad in love, prayer, laughs and memories, the music played in the background.

That is until the daft thing thing stopped working. “Daft,” as well as “what the sam hill,” is the type of polite expletive my father, a consummate gentleman, would use during stressful times, usually behind the wheel while driving through Assachusetts traffic. Unlike me, his artsy, outspoken daughter, he never swore.

Frustrated, I took the malfunctioning boombox back to the store. Fortunately, it was discovered that my son’s little boom box/radio actually did the trick, after having been written off last year as a lost cause when his scratched Sesame Street CDs refused to play. Rejoicing, I grabbed it on my way back to the hospital. The last thing dad heard in this existence was Mozart’s “Serenade in G” and “Piano Sonata No. 15 in C” playing on continual loop in the background, right by his pillow.

After dad’s soul left this plane of existence, the lyrics of a song started to play in my mind. The song’s melody was clear, but the words, heard when I couldn’t have been older than 4, were a mystery; I could only recall a few:

Baby I know. I know I could be so in love with you.

The melody evoked warm feelings of childhood joy, innocence and head-to-toe happiness, the emotions I basked in at the time of my life when those emotions ruled all.

But what the sam hill was that song?

Immediately I typed the remembered words into Google search and found the song: “Oh, Babe What Would You Say” by Hurricane Smith. Listening caused me to relive those ebullient feelings of a simpler time when a smiling, kind man with a big heart would play hide and seek with me in the living room and reward me with a Hershey bar, when he would smile at me with loving eyes and my world felt safe and warm. I wept with tears of wonder while downloading the song from iTunes. It’s been playing on continuous loop ever since.

Thank you daddy for sharing your love of music. Thank you for the wonderful memories. Thank you for being my father. It is my prayer that you enjoy the music of the One Soul forever.

“Oh, Babe What Would You Say” – Hurricane Smith

This song started playing in my head almost immediately after my dad passed away a few days ago. I have been constantly playing it on continuous loop ever since.

The version I downloaded from iTunes is just as my subconscious remembered it; featuring a lush background of big band strings and horns with a glorious saxophone solo.

I love this song. Joy ensues every time I hear it. Memories of my loving dad as the center of my world flood my senses with every note. Reading the comments from others around the ‘net shows that I’m not alone. There is an intrinsically nostalgic vibe to this song which has withstood the test of time.

I also uncovered a performance from the Johnny Carson show.

Hurricane Smith, a studio engineer, worked extensively with the Beatles which may or may not explain the upbeat quirkiness. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Rest in glorious peace, daddy. Thanks for the memories.

There will come a time when you think everything is finished. That will be the beginning.- Louis L’Amour

This quote can apply to a lot of things in life but it really resonated with me when I was going through the editing process for Blood To Blood.

Contrary to what some people think, there are self-published authors who actually spend much time and money in the editing process, as all writers should. It took me 3 months to write the first draft and 2 years to get it right.

But after all the beta-reads, re-writing and critiques the part that really got me was the copy-editing. You get to the point where, finally, you’re hiring a copy-editor and there’s actually an end in sight. Or so you think. The process took about a month and a half.

But eventually, once I’d read the manuscript 3 more times after the final, final, final submission from my fabulous copy editor, I did get to the point where I, with butterflies in my stomached, realized there was no more editing to do.

Or so I thought…

Yep, as I was reading the book out loud to my 8 year-old, we came across an instance of the word “the” which should have been “then.”

It just goes to show you, no matter how far you think you’ve come, there’s always some more to go. I’m grateful for making it through that journey! How about you? Any tales of perseverance to share?

Gorgeous! They also have a bunch of great City of Bones cast photos, including one of Jonathan Rhys Myers who is cast as Valentine. They’ve already photoshopped the white hair on him, lol.

If you haven’t started to read the books this movie is based on, you might want to start now. City of Bones will be coming out in August 2013, so you have a little time to get caught up. Visit Ms. Clare’s Goodreads page or her blog to get information on her as well as well as every book within the Mortal Instruments series.

Thanks to Just Jared for the title treatment heads up!

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Dracula and Mortal Instruments

What do Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Dracula and Mortal Instruments have in common?

Rhys Meyers is in negotiations to play Valentine in the film version of Mortal Instruments. And if that wasn’t exciting enough he’s also set to portray Dracula in the upcoming TV series.

I fell in love with JHM when he did Bend It Like Beckham ( I was so jealous of Parminder Nagra’s character getting to kiss him and what not). Of course he was absolutely brilliant in The Tudors; heck it’s arguable that his incredible talent made that show the classic it is. Henry VIII never looked so sexy…

Either way, it’s about time Meyers got a role in a fantasy production; I think the closest he ever came to the genre was the Julie Taymor-directed Titus, which took Shakespeare to a whole ‘nother level. JHM’s crazy, bad-boy Irish stare-down glare will be perfect in both of these productions.  He’ll be the most fascinating Dracula since Gary Oldman. I can’t wait! Can you?

Just in case you missed that Jess and Joe kiss from Bend It Like Beckham… here it is. Enjoy!

Anna Karenina Trailer

If you haven’t already, check out the Anna Karenina trailer below.

I loved Keira Knightley in 2005’s Pride and Prejudice (my absolute favorite version of the film, although not necessarily my favorite all-time Mr. Darcy). I can’t wait to see her in this with Jude Law. Now if she’d only do another movie with Jonathan Rhys Meyers aka Mr. HOT (they worked well together in Bend It Like Beckham).

Current Playlist

My current playlist

To answer the question of what’s on my current playlist, I’m listing the most prominent artists on my daily rotation. This list changes as my mood changes and I think you might be surprised at what’s on it today.

These tunes are getting ridiculous play regardless of whether they’re connected to a scene, or character, or not. Many of these songs have a direct relationship to what I’m writing, some of them have no connection whatsoever–at least none that I can see right now. Sometimes, I’ll have music on rotation for no apparent reason until one day it either hits me as to why it’s on the list, or it just starts making sense. Sometimes the characters choose the song(s) and I have little to do with it.

For the record I’m currently writing two pieces: a short story and the follow-up to Blood To Blood.

Weekly Word from Lao Tzu

Today’s Weekly Word from Lao Tzu is brought to you by the letter Y…

A thousand-mile journey begins under your feet. ~ Lao Tzu

So true! The last thousand-mile journey I completed ended when I finally published my first novel, Blood To Blood. That was a couple days ago. That particular journey only took 3 years (but that’s another book). And you know what? I’m ready for the next journey.

How about you? Are you traveling right now? Or did you just complete a journey? Wanna talk about it?

Blood To Blood Excerpt

Blood To Blood Excerpt #1: “The good thing about having a sister who can fly is that you never have to wait for her too long. Cici soon bounded up the steps from whatever hidden spot it was she had dropped out of the sky. She reached into her backpack and pulled out a slim thermos. “Drink,” she ordered. The smell wafting out of the metal container confirmed it was blood. Before I could even think about it, I drained it quicker than you could say, “Type A.”

And that was that.

No trumpet fanfare. No divine choir singing from parted cumulus clouds or anything else I’d fantasized would accompany such a momentous occasion. Nonetheless, I was now a bonafide blood drinker.

I broke out in a cold sweat. “More.”

Blood To Blood Novel

Blood To Blood Novel

Finally, after 3 years of writing, re-writing, editing and querying over and over again, my book is out and in the world. Blood To Blood, available in pre-release, is my first novel.

*Major exhale* Phew!

I am so very excited to be sharing these characters with everyone! There’s something very liberating about knowing that I did my part to infuse these characters with the personalities they showed me, and now it’s out of my hands.

During pre-release, the book will be available exclusively through Kindle where you can buy or borrow it. The official release, which will see it available across multiple platforms as well as in hard copy, will be in October 2012.

There’s nothing more I can do with this book except hope that readers enjoy it and fall in love with Angel, Sawyer and Justin, too.

By the way, you may wonder how I chose to celebrate this momentous occasion. I went to see Dark Knight Rises. It rocked. However, my prayers and love energy go out to the people whose lives were forever changed by the senseless killings at a screening this past weekend.

Well, I’m off to write the next story. Hmmm…it may include at least one of the above-mentioned Blood To Blood characters. In the meantime, enjoy an excerpt.
